About the role
The Adoption Assistant Volunteer is pivotal to our Customer Care Team. This team delivers excellent customer service to RSPCA customers and animals within their care, ensuring a positive outcome for animals within the centre and a positive customer experience.
As an Adoption Assistant Volunteer, you will welcome customers to the adoptions area, provide support to customers wishing to adopt and support the customer care staff to provide a positive customer experience.
Your exceptional people skills and affinity for animals will ensure a positive experience for our customers. A strong customer service ethic coupled with a passion for animal welfare will be key characteristics of volunteers in this role.
Role duties & responsibilities
The Adoption Assistant Volunteer may be responsible for the following activities:
Meet and greet customers on arrival to the adoption area.
Attend to customer enquiries regarding the adoption process.
In partnership with the customer care staff, educate customers in the responsibilities of animal ownership and the adoption process as required.
Assist with maintaining a clean and tidy adoption area.
General administrative duties including but not limited to filing, shredding and cleaning.
Observe interactions between customers and animals that have been approved by customer care staff, with attention to the safety of all parties.
Escort new owners to the veterinary clinic for pre-adoption vet consults.
Escort new owners to the customer care counter to complete the adoption process including assisting with any food, retail and animal care needs.
Assist with moving animals within the centre and exercising adoption animals.
Undertake responsible care and management of animals in adoption, including providing environmental enrichment; cleaning enclosures and carriers; ensuring access to fresh water and food; and apply and remove items accordingly to protect animals from the elements as instructed.
Skills & experience required
To be successful in this role, the volunteer will possess the following necessary skills and attributes:
Great interpersonal skills and a genuine love for interacting with and helping people
Excellent customer service skills
An affinity/love of working with animals
Confidence in working with animals and experience in caring for animals (this can include animals you have cared for at home)
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Ability to think on your feet and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
Physical ability to be standing and walking around for extended periods (able to lift up to 10kg)
RSPCA Volunteer experience or experience working in animal welfare
Customer service experience
Good knowledge of common breeds of dogs, and cats and the needs of the different animals that are needing new homes including guinea pigs, rabbits etc
Good knowledge of and understanding of responsible animal care
